Chang, Jung, with Jon Halliday
Mao - signed by the authors The Unknown Story

Dustwrapper is sunned along the spine panel; now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good. Signed by the authors. Banned in China upon its release, this is an uncompromising biography of the Great Leader of the Chinese Communist Revolution which re-evaluates his accomplishments without the dogmatic spectacles of the Red Guard worldview. Chang has been criticised for being overly critical of Mao (given her family's history as outlined in "Wild Swans") but her observations are not without their basis in fact as discovered in documents heretofore unpublished in the West. For those interested in the man without the party line.

He witnessed the transition of the game from amateur to professional status and led his team through 4 World Cup finals from 1996 to 2007. Drawing attention on the field, Gregan has never been afraid to attract fire off-field also, and this biography is replete with the forthright candour that has defined this great Australian player from the first.

Octavo; hardcover, with illustrated endpapers; 205pp., with many monochrome illustrations and 6pp. of full-colour plates. Signed in ink on the title page; slightly rolled; text block edges lightly spotted. Dustwrapper is lightly rubbed with very minor edgewear; now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good. An overview of the changing game of Rugby Union, not from the glamorous, point-scoring perspective of the backline stars, but from the bottom of the ruck, a view often obscured from the eyes of spectators. Simon Poidevin began playing the game in his home town of Goulburn NSW, before being selected for the 1st grade and thereafter becoming a "fixture" of Australia's participation in the world game. He outlines his experiences to Jim Webster in this book, of the changes, both politically and personally, which he experienced from the late 1970s through the heyday of his time with the game in the 1980s.

Tolstoy, Nikolai
The Quest for Merlin: signed
Little Brown & Co., Boston, 1985.
Second US printing: octavo; hardcover, with gilt spine titles and a blind-stamped upper board decoration; 322pp., with 16pp. of monochrome plates. Mild wear; cocked; spine extremities lightly softened; text block edges spotted and top edge dusted; inked inscription to the flyleaf. Dustwrapper lightly spotted on the verso. Very good. Nikolai Tolstoy sets out to prove that Merlin did in fact exist (though not as a contemporary of Arthur). Through literary sources, including the earlier Welsh manuscripts which he has carefully evaluated, and through his own study of the British countryside he shows Merlin was indeed an historical figure, living in what are now the Lowlands of Scotland at the end of the sixth century. He believes Merlin was a druid, an authentic prophet, surviving in a pagan enclave of the North after the collapse of Christianized Roman Britain. He throws light on the mysteries of Stonehenge: he has identified the scenes of battles and prophecies: and he has even found the sacred mountain spring where Merlin took refuge.
