Clark, Jane & Bridget Whitelaw
Golden Summers Heidelberg and Beyond
International Cultural Corporation, Melbourne, 1985.
Paperback, quarto, 200pp., numerous monochrome and colour illustrations. Minor wear only; near fine. This book covers the most celebrated period in the history of Australian art: those years from 1885 until shortly after the turn of the century which were dominated by Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder and Fred McCubbin. Popularly known as the Heidelberg School, they ranged far beyond their own initial forays into the bush around Melbourne. They painted Sydney Harbour, ventured up the Hawkesbury River and also depicted Australia's emerging cities, pastoral industries and rapidly disappearing pioneering past. They delighted in its beaches and in leisured moments of Australian society taking its ease. They loved both the zenith landscape with the baking sun at high noon and a luminescent moment of moonrise. Above all they believed that the task for the Australian artist was to paint Australian realities. After the grave and splendid vision of colonial masters, painters of the Heidelberg School turned for inspiration to the grit of daily Australian experience. They won for themselves, their contemporaries and for future generations a rich and stirring poetry from the spectacle of a landscape being transformed into a country which bore its own distinctive identity. The Golden Summers exhibition which this book accompanied, brought together the nascent forces of Australian art with its artistic and philosophic impetus which gave rise to the Heidelberg School. The leading masters as well as their less well-known contemporaries are represented here.

Hart, Deborah (ed.)
Grace Cossington Smith
National Gallery, Canberra, 2005.
Quarto; paperback; 187pp., with many full-colour illustrations. Minor edgewear and scuffing to cover. Very good to near fine. "Grace Cossington Smith has long been considered an anomaly. Outwardly she was diffident and retiring; she generally dressed in a way that reflected her modesty. She lived a quiet life on the North Shore in Turramurra for most of her life and, unlike so many struggling artists, she was financially independent which enabled her to focus on her art. When she finally came to public prominence, at the time of her first retrospective, Cossington Smith was eighty one years of age, and many still hold in their minds the picture of her as a very proper, diminutive elderly artist. These images do not correspond with stereotypical viewpoints of an avant-garde artist, taken to task for being too radical by the critics in the 1920s and 30s. Yet from the time when she discovered a distinctive approach in her art she refused to compromise her vision and her best works were usually better than those of her modernist peers, especially her male peers. It is the art that endures, ... (she) was a complex, intriguing artist whose oeuvre is as varied as it is brilliant and distinctive." (foreword).

Olsen, John, with Andy Harris (Sowerby Smith, illus.)
Culinaria The Cuisine of the Sun
Tim Olsen Gallery, Woollahra NSW, 2010.
Square quarto; paperback; 46pp., with many monochrome and colour illustrations. Light wear; some rubbing to the covers. Very good. "I had never, in a cloistered childhood, ever cooked, but I had with me from London - I don't know why - a copy of Elizabeth David's 'Mediterranean Cooking'. When I finally settled in Deia de Mallorca, I came to realise that all these splendid dishes derived from a peasant necessity - vegetables and fruits that naturally grew there. Spain was still recovering from a horrific civil war; consequently people were very poor, meat was very expensive - there was only one sheep killed a week. The painting in this exhibition 'The Butcher's Cart, Deia de Mallorca' is an enactment of how the meat was displayed in large chunks no matter which part it came from. The resulting scene had a primitive, animalistic vitality about it. I'm reminded that all art is memory of old-age things, dark things." - John Olsen
